On “Unison,” and while in the U.S., Michael plays a 7/8- size 1930s Mittenwald double bass that was previously owned by Dave Holland from approximately 1990-2000. He also plays a 1927 Sacconi cello, and an Elrick 5-string electric bass as well as a Jaws 4-string Jazz Bass.
In China, he plays a Shen 3/4-size hybrid double bass, a Fernandes 5-string electric bass re-fitted with Seymour Duncan Basslines pickups, as well as Jaws 4-string fretted and fretless Jazz Basses. He also has a travel-size electric upright bass made in Beijing, and re-fitted with  a David Gage Realist pickup

On both double basses he uses a David Gage Realist pickup, sometimes combined with a K&K condenser microphone.

For amplification in the U.S., he uses an Eden WT-400 Traveler head with an Ampeg 12” cabinet; in China he uses a Carlsbro 12” combo amp. He also uses a Raven labs pre-amp/blender, and a Zoom B2.1u multi-effects/pre-amp unit.
