            Introducing Michael Hicks

            A Short Biography

            Currently, Michael resides in Shanghai, China, where he has lived for the past six years (2011). Here he is an active musician and band leader, playing at venues such as Number 5 (house bassist for 6 months), JZ Club, CJW (house bassist for 1.5 years), House of Blues and Jazz, Sound Blue, Enoteca, Melting Pot, and Anar, and also plays a wide variety of shows, festivals (JZ festival 2009), events, and hotels (i.e. Royal Meridian, Waldorf Astoria).

            He has played a number of high-profile events in China, such as a Jet Li/Ferrari-sponsored fundraiser; as a member of the first Chinese-foreign band to perform a two-week tour of Lhasa, Tibet; for BMW as part of the F1 Shanghai event; as part of the JZ Big Band under the direction of Rolf Becker, including performance with renowned dancer/performer Jin Xing. He has also perfomed with prominent Shanghai-based musicians including Coco Zhao, Lawrence Ku, Alec Haavik, Heidi Krenn, Joey Lu, Arlene Estrella, Sandra Kaye, Oleg Roschin, Etienne Jeanne, Jaygo Renard, Lin Di, and several others.

            Recently he released his first recording as a leader on his own Om Mani Music label, entitled “Unison,” which features Grammy award-winning musician Esperanza Spalding on vocals on selected tracks.
